Recall Issued for Joydeco Roller Window Shade Due to Injury Hazard and Violation of Federal Regulations
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (April 27, 2025) – A recall has been issued for the Joydeco Roller Window Shades because they can pose a serious risk of entanglement and strangulation for young children.
The recall was issued on April 17, 2025. Around 73,000 units were sold prior to the recall.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Joydeco Roller Window Shades have long operating cords that can pose a serious injury risk to children. In particular, a child may inadvertently get the cords wrapped around their neck, thereby causing strangulation.
The recalled cords also violate labeling requirements for window coverings. No injuries have been reported at this time.
The Joydeco Roller Window Shades are sold exclusively on Amazon and originally manufactured in China.
Liability for Injuries Involving Window Shades
Many children have been seriously injured or killed over the years in accidents involving window shades. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “On average, about nine children under 5 years of age die every year from strangling in window blinds, shades, draperies and other window coverings with cords. There were more than 200 incidents involving children up to 8 years old due to strangulation hazards from window covering cords during a 13-year period from January 2009 through December 2021. A child died in 48% of those incidents.” Companies that manufacture window shades should take a number of measures to make them safe.
- Most window shades are required to be cordless. These are much safer for children because there is no cord that could inadvertently get wrapped around their neck.
- If a cord is used, there must be some type of tension device in order to prevent the cord from being accessible to small children.
- Shades with cords should typically have warning labels that alert parents to the risk of the device.
Companies that make shades and blinds have a legal obligation to make sure that they are reasonably safe. They must take into consideration all of the ways that their product could be used and misused. Children becoming entangled in low-hanging cords is a known hazard. This is why it is so important that most cords do not have dangling cables. If a company violates federal regulations or fails to warn about the dangers associated with their product, this could form the basis of a strict product liability claim.
A number of lawsuits have been filed after children have died due to becoming entangled by window blind cords. A BYU football star tragically lost his 3-year-old daughter, who died after becoming tangled in window blinds. Attorneys for the plaintiffs argued that the product was defective. The manufacturer eventually reached a confidential settlement with the family. It is important that certain steps are taken after any injury involving window shades.
- All medical records related to the incident should be preserved.
- It should be determined if the window shades were on any recall list.
- An experienced product liability attorney should be contacted.
In certain cases, a property owner could face liability for any injury involving window shades. Property owners have a legal obligation to ensure that their premises are free from serious hazards. This includes making sure that they are reasonably safe for children. Property owners must not install window shades that could potentially be dangerous. The family of any child who is injured by window shades may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim.
