Kubota Model RTV-X900 Utility Vehicles Recalled Over Crash Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (May 21, 2025) – Kubota Model RTV-X900 recalled because they pose a serious crash and injury risk to users.

The recall was issued on May 1, 2025. Roughly 49,640 units were sold prior to the recall.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the ball joint in the front suspension arm may loosen and suddenly separate from the suspension arm. This could result in the driver losing wheel support.

Kubota Tractor Corporation has received four reports of the ball joint becoming loose. There are no reports of injuries at this time.

The Kubota Model RTV-X900 utility vehicles were initially manufactured in the United States.

Liability for Injuries Involving Utility Vehicles

Many people are seriously injured every year in the United States involving utility vehicles. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “Over the full 5-year period from 2018 through 2022, there were an estimated 504,400 emergency department-treated injuries in the United States that were associated with OHVs. This corresponds to an annual average of around 100,900 emergency department-treated injuries over the period.” There are a number of factors that could make UTVs dangerous.

  • Speed: UTVs are often operated at high speeds over very uneven terrain. Off-road conditions can make handling a UTV much more difficult than operating a vehicle.
  • Rollovers: UTVs have a high center of gravity, which can make them much more prone to rollover accidents.
  • Constraints: UTVs often lack constraints, which can lead to riders being ejected in the event of a crash.

Companies that manufacture UTVs have a legal obligation to ensure that they are reasonably safe. They must take into consideration all of the ways that their products are likely to be used and even misused over time. A safe product should be safe over the entirety of its life cycle. If a UTV or other vehicle has a tendency to come apart over time in a way that is dangerous, this could form the basis of a strict product liability claim.

A number of lawsuits have been filed by plaintiffs injured by off-road vehicles. Consider, for example, Kosmynka v. Polaris Industries Inc. (2006). In this case, the defendant was paralyzed after his  ATV flipped over. Attorneys for the plaintiff argued that the ATV was negligently designed and failed to include proper loading instructions. A jury eventually ruled in favor of the plaintiff. Several steps should be taken after any injury involving a consumer product.

  • All medical records related to an accident should be preserved.
  • It should be determined if the product involved was on any recall list.
  • The product involved should be stored in a safe place where it is not likely to cause further harm.
  • An experienced product liability attorney should be contacted.

The vast majority of accidents involving ATVs are completely preventable. They tend to occur when companies take shortcuts in terms of safety in order to make their products cheaper or more profitable. Sadly, it is consumers that often pay the price for these decisions with their bodies and lives. Any person that is injured by an ATV may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
