Loyola University Student Injured In Chicago CTA Bus Accident

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (April 28, 2025) – An 18-year-old Loyola student was injured in a Chicago Transit Authority bus accident by N. Winthrop Ave. and W. Sheridan Road.

Cook County officials are saying that the accident took place around 3 PM. A girl was crossing the street when she was hit by a CTA bus for unknown reasons.

Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. She was transported to the hospital in order to receive care. This comes just a week after another 18-year-old female student was hit by a CTA bus by the intersection of W. Sheridan Rd. and N. Kenmore Ave.

The accident sites are just a few hundred feet away from one another. A full investigation into both accidents remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Chicago Transit Authority Bus Accidents

Many people are killed or seriously injured in bus accidents every year. According to The Journalist’s Resource, “about 63,000 buses [of all kinds] are involved in an accident each year; about 14,000 result in an injured person, and 325 result in a fatal injury. About 50 passengers (including the driver) are killed, on average, in a given year.” Intercity buses can be particularly dangerous and are roughly 2 times more likely to be involved in collisions. Many different factors could contribute to a bus accident.

  • Speeding: Bus accidents are substantially more likely to occur when a bus driver is not operating their vehicle at a safe speed.
  • Intersections: Bus accidents are more likely to occur at intersections, particularly where there is dense pedestrian traffic.
  • Fatigue: Bus drivers are often asked to work long hours and are at risk of becoming dangerously fatigued.

Buses are considered common carriers. Their drivers must operate with a great deal of caution in order to avoid harming their passengers and pedestrians. Pursuant to Illinois Vehicle Code 625 ILCS 5/11-1003.1, every driver must exercise due care to avoid colliding with any pedestrian. They must also use their horns when necessary and exercise the proper precautions to avoid colliding with any child or obviously confused person. The company or municipal entity that a bus driver worked for could also be held at fault for a collision.

As a general principle, employers are vicariously liable for the wrongful actions of their employees. The Chicago Transit Authority has faced many lawsuits after people have been injured in bus accidents. The CTA recently paid a $20 million settlement after a woman was seriously injured from being hit by a CTA bus making a left turn. She sustained a traumatic injury to her head and her leg. It is important that evidence is properly preserved after any bus accident.

  • Photographs of the accident site should be taken.
  • Medical records related to any injuries should be preserved.
  • The contact information for all eyewitnesses should be collected.
  • The actions of the bus driver leading up to the collision should be understood.
  • Surveillance footage that may have captured the accident should be reviewed.

Buses can be particularly dangerous for pedestrians. Even a low-impact collision can leave victims with serious injuries. It is important that accident victims undergo a thorough medical evaluation after any accident. This will help reveal some injuries that may not have otherwise been obvious. They should also strongly consider speaking with an experienced bus accident attorney. An attorney can help victims recover damages for lost wages and medical bills.
