Chicago police officials are saying that the incident took place around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday. Witnesses are saying that a person who does not live in the building gained entry and walked into the mail room.

He began to damage packages there and then walked to the fitness center. A 38-year-old man was exercising at the fitness center.

He was stabbed and seriously injured by the assailant who was later arrested by police. Police are describing the attacker as a 24-year-old man from Minnesota. They also recovered a knife they believed was used in the attack.

Paramedics were called to the River Plaza condo building to help the victim. He was transported to the hospital with an inch wide stab wound beneath his ribs.

Chicago police officials are continuing their investigation into the attack.

Liability In Chicago Condominium Stabbings

Violent assaults have been on the rise in 2021 as more people have integrated back into work and school. According to Statista, “Property crimes outnumbered violent crimes in the U.S. in 2020, numbering 6.45 million and 1.31 million respectively. Larceny was the most common property crime with 4.6 million incidents, while aggravated assaults accounted for around two thirds of violent crimes.” There are a number of steps that people can take to help protect themselves from becoming the victims of a violent crime.

  • Trust your instincts and listen to your judgement when something seems off in any situation.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and try to avoid flaunting expensive jewelry and other belongings. This should be done even in relatively safe areas.
  • Pay attention to the people around you and act confident. Criminals look for victims who seem meek, mild and distracted.

Property owners in Illinois have a legal responsibility to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition. This includes taking measures to protect guests from violent criminal activity on a property. Businesses like apartment complexes and condominiums must provide adequate security to prevent reasonably foreseeable criminal activity. When a business fails to implement reasonable security measures they could be liable if someone is attacked.

The level of security that a property owner may need will typically depend on two things. First, it will depend on the history of criminal activity in a neighborhood. Second, it will depend on the history of criminal activity at a particular business. A bingo hall for seniors in a safe neighborhood will typically need little to no security. An apartment complex with a history of assaults in a high crime area will need many security measures. For example, security guards, cameras and adequate lighting can all work to prevent criminal behavior.

Consider, for example, the case of McKenna v. AlliedBarton Sec. Servs., LLC. A man contacted a law firm seeking to patent an idea. He was informed by McKenna that there were similar patents already in place and he would not be able to help. The man with the idea became obsessed with the notion that his idea was stolen. He came to the law office of McKenna and killed him and two other people with a revolver. Attorneys for the plaintiff argued that AlliedBarton failed to provide security officers with proper training and failed to implement duress codes. They were eventually able to secure a verdict for their client. There are a number of steps that should be taken after any assault at a business.

  • Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
  • Security guards should be interviewed.
  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • Medical records should be sought.
  • A thorough, independent investigation should be conducted.

Any person that is injured in a condominium stabbing may be able to seek justice through a negligent security claim. Damages can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain ands suffering. Sadly, however, property owners will often fight hard to deny liability for any assault on their premises. An Illinois negligent security lawyer can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
