Liability For Quincy Dog Attacks
Dog attacks are one of the leading causes of preventable injuries in the United States. According to Injury Epidemiology, “Data covering the years 2001–2003 revealed that approximately 4.5 million individuals in the United States were bitten by dogs each year (Gilchrist et al. 2008). Of these, 19% necessitated medical attention. Between 2005 and 2013, there were an average of 337,103 visits to emergency departments (EDs) per year for dog bites (Loder 2019).” Dog owners should take a number of measures in order to prevent dog attacks.
- Dog owners should ensure that their dog is on a leash at all times, except when they are in designated off-leash areas.
- Dog owners should ensure that their dog is properly secured in their home or yard.
- Dog owners should always supervise their dogs whenever they are interacting with new people.
If a dog attacks someone in Illinois, their owner could be liable for any resulting injuries. Pursuant to 510 ILCS 5/16, “If a dog or other animal, without provocation, attacks, attempts to attack, or injures any person who is peaceably conducting himself or herself in any place where he or she may lawfully be, the owner of such dog or other animal is liable in civil damages to such person for the full amount of the injury proximately caused thereby.” It is important that certain steps be taken after any dog attack.
- Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
- Medical records should be preserved.
- Surveillance footage should be sought.
- A police report should be created.
- An experienced dog bite injury attorney should be contacted.
Dog attacks are typically highly preventable. They are much more likely to occur when owners let their dogs off leash in public areas. Recovering from a dog attack can be extremely challenging. Victims are often left with high medical bills and may need to take extensive periods of time off of work. Any person who is injured in a dog attack may have legal recourse through a civil claim. A dog bite injury attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
