CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (June 17, 2024) – Megadyne issued a voluntary recall of MEGA SOFT Pediatric Patient Return Electrodes after reports that patients sustained burn injuries.
An initial investigation revealed that a combination of factors may have been present when patients sustained thermal injuries. From 2018 to the present, there have been 4 reported injuries associated with the use of MEGADYNE™ MEGA SOFT™ Pediatric Patient Return Electrodes.

Liability For Burn Injuries Involving Medical Products
Accidents and serious injuries involving medical products are sadly far too common. According to the Associated Press, medical devices for pain conditions have caused more than 80,000 deaths over a ten-year period from 2008 to 2018. There were also 5,600 reports of burn injuries during that same period. Medical device companies should take a number of measures in order to prevent patients from being injured by their products.
- Testing: Companies should rigorously test their products in all of the various ways they will likely be used and misused.
- Compliance: Companies should ensure that their medical devices are compliant with all Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards.
- Warnings: Companies should ensure that they issue clear and concise warning labels to alert consumers about the potential dangers of their products.
The company that manufactured a medical device could be liable if someone is injured by it. Generally speaking, companies can be held strictly liable when they sell a defective product to the public, which then causes injury. A company could also be liable for the marketing defects associated with their products. A market defect may be present if a manufacturer fails to warn consumers about the potential dangers associated with their product. Burn injuries can be particularly painful and challenging.
- Pain and Discomfort: Burn injuries can cause extreme pain and discomfort, depending on the severity of injuries.
- Long Recovery Periods: Burn injuries may require a patient to undergo numerous skin grafts, which require long recovery periods.
- Reduced Mobility: Severe burns can result in reduced mobility and nerve damage that can limit a person’s ability to be gainfully employed.
- Medical Costs: The cost of treating burn injuries can be very high, especially if the injured party does not have medical insurance.
It can be hard to know where to begin after being injured by a medical product. People use these products with the hope of receiving treatment, but far too often dangerous products only make their situation worse. Sadly, medical device manufacturers will usually do everything in their power to deny responsibility if their product injures someone. This is one of the reasons it is so important to seek the guidance of an experienced product liability attorney.
