Cook County officials are saying the accident took place around 12:40 PM on Thursday. A van was heading down the roadway when it was involved in a collision with a Toyota sedan.

They were transported to the hospital to receive treatment. The driver of the van received multiple citations.
Liability for Garfield Park Car Accidents
Drivers have a legal obligation to use caution to avoid collisions. Pursuant to Illinois Vehicle Code 625 ILCS 5/11-601, “No vehicle may be driven upon any highway of this State at a speed which is greater than is reasonable and proper with regard to traffic conditions and the use of the highway, or endangers the safety of any person or property.” Several different factors could contribute to any collision.
- Many car accidents involve drivers that make unprotected left turns.
- Driver distraction is a leading cause of preventable vehicle accidents.
- Collisions involving drivers that follow other vehicles too closely.
If a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting another vehicle, this could create the basis of a negligence claim. There is a presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that departs from the roadway and collides with stationary objects or people. Liability for a car accident could extend beyond any one person. If a van or other vehicle was being used for commercial purposes at the time of a crash, the company that owned or operated that van could be liable.
Common Injuries Associated With Chicago Car Accidents
Car accidents remain a leading cause of preventable injury and death in the United States. According to the IIHS, “A total of 40,901 people died in motor vehicle crashes in 2023.” The U.S. Department of Transportation’s most recent estimate of the annual economic cost of crashes is $340 billion. Contributing to the death toll are alcohol, speeding, lack of seat belt use, and other problematic behaviors. Death rates vary by vehicle type, driver age and sex, and other factors.” Victims of car accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
- Many victims sustain broken bones.
- Internal injuries to a person’s organs are also very common.
- The force of an impact can cause a person to hit their head and sustain a traumatic brain injury.
Any person injured in a car accident may be able to pursue damages through a personal claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering. Unfortunately, drivers and their insurance providers will virtually never accept responsibility if they are involved in an injury collision. This is why it is so important for victims to seek legal counsel early on.
