Nancy Benedict Killed in Pontiac Car Accident

PONTIAC, ILLINOIS (December 9, 2025) – A 70-year-old woman identified as Nancy Benedict has tragically died in a Pontiac car accident near the intersection of West Reynolds Street and Wal-Mart Drive.

Livingston County officials are saying that the accident took place shortly before 10:00 AM on Thursday. Nancy Benedict was driving when her vehicle was T-boned by a Dodge pickup truck heading east on Reynolds Street.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the victim. Despite life-saving measures, Nancy Benedict died due to the severe nature of her injuries.

The driver of the pickup truck was cited for disobeying the traffic light. A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing.

Liability for Pontiac Car Accidents

Drivers are expected to use caution to avoid colliding with other vehicles in the roadway. They must obey all regulations and traffic lights. Pursuant to 625 ILCS 5/11-306, the driver of any vehicle facing a red traffic signal must yield at the intersection and only proceed to a green light after it is safe to do so. There are many factors that could contribute to a car accident.

  • Speed: Drivers are substantially more likely to go through red lights if they are speeding.
  • Distraction: Another major cause of car accidents is driver distraction. Many drivers are fixated on their phones and not paying attention to traffic.
  • Intoxication: Driver intoxication can also be highly dangerous. What some drivers do not realize is that many different substances could impair them besides alcohol.

If a driver goes past a red light or yield sign without stopping, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. These types of accidents are nearly 100% preventable. Depending on the facts of any case, liability for a collision could extend beyond any person held at fault. For example, if a pickup truck or other vehicle being used for commercial purposes is involved in an accident, the company that owned the truck could be legally responsible.

Steps to Take After Pontiac Car Accidents

Car accidents remained one of the leading causes of personal injury and death in the United States. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, “In 2023, there were 299,133 crashes involving motor vehicles in Illinois. Injury crashes accounted for 20.6% of these crashes (61,547), while fatal crashes (1,142) accounted for less than 1.0% of these crashes. Crashes involving an A-injury accounted for 11.6% of injury crashes.” Several actions should be taken after any car accident in Illinois.

  • Police: Law enforcement should be called to the scene as early as possible so that they can begin an investigation.
  • Eyewitnesses: All of the eyewitnesses for the crash should have their contact information gathered.
  • Evidence: Evidence related to the collision should be carefully preserved. This will include photos of the accident site and road debris.
  • Legal Review: It is important that serious collisions are carefully reviewed by a team with ample experience in tort claims.

Car accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to involve drivers that are violating one or more traffic regulations. In many circumstances, they may involve liability on the part of several different entities. Victims of these collisions are protected by a number of laws. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil action. This right extends to the family members of any person killed due to the reckless actions of another driver.
