1.8 Million SharkNinja Ninja Foodi OP300 Series Multi-Function Pressure Cookers Recalled After Dozens of People Sustain Serious Burn Injuries–Numerous Lawsuits Filed By Injury Victims
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (May 6, 2025) – SharkNinja recalls Ninja Foodi OP300 Series Multi-Function Pressure Cookers because they can pose a serious burn hazard.
The recall was announced on May 1, 2025. Over 1.8 million units of the affected product were sold. This includes 184,000 sold in Canada.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the lids on the SharkNinja Foodi OP300 Series Multi-Function Pressure Cookers can be opened while the device is being used.
This can cause hot steam and other contents to escape and hit the user, thereby creating a serious risk of burn injuries for device users. SharkNinja has received at least 160 reports of people suffering burn injuries while using the device.
More than 50 of these incidents involve people sustaining second-degree or third-degree burns to their face or other parts of their body. Injuries from the Ninja pressure cookers have led to at least 26 lawsuits.
The devices were sold at numerous online and physical retailers, including Walmart, Costco, Sam’s Club, Amazon, and Target. The SharkNinja Foodi OP300 Series Multi-Function Pressure Cookers were manufactured in China.
A full investigation into all of the injuries remains ongoing.

Liability for Injuries Involving Pressure Cookers
Accidents involving pressure cookers are unfortunately all too common. According to one study in BMJ Journals, “The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) was queried to identify injuries associated with pressure cookers between 1 January 2003 and 31 December 2019. The NEISS query identified 759 actual pressure cooker injuries between 2003 and 2019, yielding a national estimate of 28 337 (95% CI 24 588 to 32,086) injuries treated in US emergency departments, 1667 cases annually.” Companies that make pressure cookers should take several steps to ensure that they are safe.
- Safety Valves: An immense amount of pressure builds up in pressure cookers as they heat food. These devices should have primary and secondary backup valves that release pressure when it exceeds safety limits.
- Lid-Locking Mechanism: Pressure cookers should have a lid-locking mechanism that prevents the device from being opened while it is pressurized.
- Product Testing: Companies should test pressure cookers in all the real-world scenarios that they are likely to be used and possibly misused. These devices should be safe, even if they aren’t being used exactly as intended.
Companies that design pressure cookers and other consumer products have a legal obligation to ensure that those devices are safe. They must comply with all relevant state and federal safety standards. If a pressure cooker has design defects that make it dangerous, this could form the basis of a strict product liability claim. For example, a pressure cooker may lack an adequate sealing gasket or lid-locking mechanism that prevents the device from being opened while under pressure.
Companies also have a legal obligation to warn customers about all of the potential dangers associated with their products. In certain circumstances, this may require the use of warning labels. It could also require the use of clear safety instructions. If a company fails to warn consumers about the non-obvious dangers associated with their product, this could form the basis of a product liability claim. Most consumers would not expect to be seriously injured merely by checking on their food in a pressure cooker.
As stated previously, several lawsuits have already been filed by people injured while using Ninja pressure cookers. Consider, for example, Randle v. SharkNinja Operating LLC. According to the complaint, the defendant sustained major burn injuries when the lid on the pressure cooker suddenly and unexpectedly exploded off during normal use of the device. Attorneys for the plaintiff argued that the device was defectively and negligently designed. In particular, it failed to properly prevent the lid from being removed with normal force during ordinary and foreseeable use when the unit was pressurized. Several steps should be taken after any injury involving a pressure cooker.
- Medical Evaluation: Victims should seek a thorough medical evaluation and treatment for all of their injuries. Many of the injuries associated with a pressure cooker accident may not be immediately obvious.
- Evidence Preservation: The device that caused the injury should be stored in a secure location where it is not likely to cause additional harm.
- Investigation: It should be determined if the device that caused the injury was part of any recall or the subject of litigation claims.
- Legal Counsel: Victims should seek the guidance of an experienced product liability attorney. An attorney can evaluate all of the unique facts of your case free of cost and let you know how much compensation you may be entitled to.
Burn injuries can be incredibly painful and often necessitate multiple, expensive skin grafts to adequately treat. According to one study in the National Institutes of Health, the median cost to treat burn injuries was $44,024. Accident victims are often left with disfiguring scars even after their wounds physically heal. It is therefore critical for those injured by pressure cookers to seek skilled legal advice. Any person injured by a pressure cooker may be able to receive compensation to cover all of their medical bills and lost wages.
