Liability For Woodstock Semi-Truck Accidents
Truck accidents remain very common across the United States. According to the National Safety Council, “In 2022, 5,837 large trucks were involved in a fatal crash, an 1.8% increase from 2021 and a 49% increase in the last 10 years. The involvement rate per 100 million large-truck miles traveled is up 3% from 2021, and up 24% in the last 10 years.” There are a number of common causes of truck accidents.
- Truck drivers are often asked to work long hours and may naturally become fatigued.
- Trucks have large blind spots that can obscure the presence of other vehicles.
- Trucks can weigh 80,000 lbs and take the length of two football fields to come to a complete stop.
Left turns are among the most dangerous maneuvers that truck drivers can make. They must use caution and check their blind spots before making turns. Pursuant to Illinois Vehicle Code (625 ILCS 5/11-707), no person shall make a left turn or U-turn upon a roadway unless such a movement can be made with reasonable safety. If a truck driver makes a left turn into the path of another vehicle prior to a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any truck accident.
- Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
- Surveillance footage should be sought.
- The truck’s event data recorder should be collected.
- Photos of the accident site should be taken.
Truck accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to occur when one or more drivers are not following safety protocols. For example, there are regulations with respect to how many hours a truck driver is allowed to work. When a truck driver works beyond these hours, they may become dangerously fatigued. This is exactly the type of environment where collisions are more likely.
