Liability For Chicago Transit Authority Bus Accidents

Commercial buses pose a number of safety concerns for pedestrians and those in smaller vehicles. According to the Journalist’s Resource, there are about 63,000 bus accidents every year. These accidents result in around 63,000 injuries and 325 fatalities on average. Most of the victims are either pedestrians or in smaller passenger vehicles. Bus drivers should take a number of actions in order to avoid causing collisions.

  • Bus drivers should check their blind spots before making turns.
  • Bus drivers should be well rested before heading out onto the road.
  • Bus drivers should continuously scan the road ahead of them.

Bus companies are considered “common carriers,” and their drivers are held to a high standard in terms of safety. They must operate their vehicles with an abundance of caution. This includes driving at a safe speed at all times. Depending on the prevailing conditions, drivers may need to travel well below the speed limit. Victims of bus accidents should take several measures to preserve their rights.

  • Victims should seek medical care as soon as possible.
  • Victims should collect the police reports related to the collision.
  • Victims should consult with an experienced bus accident attorney.

Bus collisions are often highly preventable. It is possible that there could be several liable parties for any bus collision. However, bus companies will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility if one of their drivers is involved in a collision. This is why it is so important that evidence is properly preserved after any crash. Evidence can help paint a clear picture of what went wrong, regardless of what any person may claim.
