Pedestrian Critically Injured In Belleville Car Accident

BELLEVILLE, ILLINOIS (November 18, 2023) – A male pedestrian was critically injured in a Belleville car accident along the 2500 block of Carlyle Avenue.

St. Clair County officials are saying that the accident took place around 5:21 p.m. on Friday. An adult male entered the roadway and tried to cross the street near the Hardee’s when they were hit by a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.

Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. He was taken to the hospital with critical injuries. A full investigation into the cause of the Belleville pedestrian collision remains ongoing.

Liability For St Clair County Pedestrian Accidents

Far too many pedestrians are killed or seriously injured every year. According to the NHTSA, “In 2021 there were 7,388 pedestrians killed in traffic crashes, a 12.5- percent increase from the 6,565 pedestrian fatalities in 2020. This is the highest since 1981 when 7,837 pedestrians died in traffic crashes.” There are many steps that drivers should take in order to avoid hitting pedestrians.

  • Drivers should check their blind spots before making turns.
  • Drivers should slow down during periods of inclement weather.
  • Drivers should always use their turn signals to alert pedestrians of their intentions.

Pedestrian collisions are usually avoidable when drivers abide by all traffic regulations. Pursuant to Illinois Vehicle Code 625 ILCS 5/11-1003.1, every driver must exercise due care to avoid colliding with any pedestrian. They must also use their horn when necessary and exercise the proper precaution to avoid colliding with any child or obviously confused person. If a driver fails to slow down and hits a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim.

Pickup trucks are often used for commercial purposes. For example, many companies use pickup trucks to transport construction or landscaping materials. If a pickup truck driver was working at the time of a collision, their employer could be held at fault. Generally speaking, companies are liable for the wrongful acts of their employees – insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties. It is important that evidence is properly preserved after any car accident.

  • Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • Surveillance footage of the crash should be sought.
  • Photos of the accident site should be taken.

Pedestrian accidents can be incredibly challenging. Victims are often left with high medical bills and may need to take weeks or months off of work. To make things worse, drivers will often do everything in their power to deny liability if they are involved in a collision. A pedestrian accident attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case free of cost and let you know if you have a claim that can be pursued.
