Liability for Zeigler House Explosions
In Illinois, liability for any home explosion typically hinges on what the potential source of the explosion was. A large portion of home explosions are caused by gas leaks. Gas companies owe a duty of care to routinely inspect and maintain all of their infrastructure. They could be liable if any type of defect with their systems resulted in an explosion. There are a number of ways that a gas company may have acted negligently prior to a catastrophic incident.
- A gas company may fail to inspect or maintain their underground lines.
- A gas company may fail to respond to reports of a leak.
- A gas company may fail to shut off gas service when they have knowledge of a known danger.
- A gas company may fail to coordinate with construction companies who are working near gas lines.
Depending on the facts of any case, there could be several sources of liability for any type of home explosions. This includes contractors who are responsible for installing equipment inside of the home. Appliance manufacturers could also be liable for incidents under a product liability claim. After any type of home explosion, it is critical that the cause of the incident be properly understood.
Steps to Take After Zeigler Home Explosions
It is vital that the actions of gas companies be examined after any home explosion. According to WBTV, “since 2010 there have been more than 2,700 gas leak incidents across the country that were considered significant and that 362 of those incidents resulted in explosions. Additionally, those incidents have injured nearly 700 people and killed more than 140.” Victims should take several steps to protect their rights.
- All medical records related to injuries should be sought.
- Any person that may have witnessed the incident should be interviewed early on while their memories are still fresh.
- Photos of the accident site should be taken.
- An inspection of all of the gas lines surrounding the home should be performed.
- The family of any person who died in a house explosion should seek an independent review by a team experienced in fire science and negligence claims.
Home explosions tend to be highly preventable. The factors that contribute to any incident could take place many hours or even weeks beforehand. Sadly, gas companies and other potentially liable parties will literally never accept responsibility for what takes place. This is why it is so important for these incidents to be properly investigated by an outside party. The family of any person who died in a home explosion is able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil action.
