Razor Issues Recall of Icon Electric Electric Scooters Because It can Disassemble Mid Use and Cause an Accident
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (August 8, 2023) – Razor has issued a recall for Icon electric scooters because it can pose a hazard to users mid use.
The recall date was listed as July 25, 2024, and about 7,300 units were sold. The issue with the Icon electric scooters is that the downtube can separate from the floorboard during rides.
This creates a fall hazard for anyone riding the scooters. There have been 34 reports of downtime separation and two reports of injuries.
The Icon scooters were sold at a number of different stores, including Target, Walmart, Best Buy, and Amazon. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
Liability For Scooter Accidents
Electric scooters have become increasingly popular in the United States. . Children tend to be the most at-risk. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “Children 14 years and younger accounted for about 36% of micromobility injuries from 2017 to 2022, double their 18% proportion of the U.S. population.” Many of the subsequent accidents have involved scooters that have fallen apart or otherwise malfunctioned. A malfunction can manifest in a variety of different ways.
- Battery problems
- Electrical issues
- Motor issues
- Brakes issues
All scooter manufacturers have a legal obligation to create products that are reasonably safe. When a scooter has a design defect, this could form the basis of a strict product liability claim. Design defects are inherent to the way that a product is created. They exist before a product is manufactured. This could include creating a product with faulty materials that are more likely to break. It is important that certain steps are taken after any scooter accident.
- Victims should seek medical support as early as possible.
- It should be determined if the scooter was part of a recall.
- A thorough investigation should be conducted.
- An experienced product liability attorney should be contacted.
Scooter accidents are largely preventable. This is particularly true when a scooter accident is due to a malfunction. These types of accidents are much more likely when scooter companies are cutting corners in terms of safety. In particular, they may not follow all of the necessary safety measures. Any person injured in a scooter accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
