CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (June 7, 2026) – A Chicago Department of Transportation worker identified as Riley O’Neil has tragically died in a Chicago semi-truck accident.

Cook County authorities are saying that the accident took place around 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Riley O’Neil was riding his bicycle in a bike lane when the driver of a vehicle opened his door directly in front of him.

This caused him to lose control of his bicycle and fall into lanes of traffic. He was subsequently hit by a semi-truck traveling behind him.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the victim. Despite life-saving measures, Riley O’Neil died due to the severe nature of his injuries.

People who knew the victim said they were absolutely devastated by the news of his death. Among other things, he was known for his work to make cycling safer for everyone in Chicago.

Police cited the driver of the car who opened their door. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Chicago Semi-Truck Accidents

Drivers in Illinois have a legal obligation to exercise due care to avoid causing accidents. They must be particularly cautious around cyclists. According to Chicago Municipal Code, “No person shall open the door of a vehicle on the side available to moving traffic unless and until it is reasonably safe to do so, and can be done without interfering with the movement of other traffic.” There are several other measures that drivers should take to avoid collisions with cyclists.

  • Blind Spots: Drivers should check their blind spots before making turns at any point in the roadway.
  • Separation: Drivers should maintain at least three feet of separation from cyclists in a bicycle lane.
  • Speed: Drivers should slow down to avoid colliding with any cyclist or pedestrian in the roadway.

If a driver opens their car door into the path of a cyclist, this could serve as evidence of negligence. Depending on the facts of any case, there could be several sources of liability for any crash. For example, a truck company could be liable for an accident if one of their drivers ran over a cyclist. Even if a cyclist is in the middle of the roadway, this does not relieve a driver of their duty to slow down and avoid collisions.

Preserving Evidence After Chicago Semi-Truck Accidents

Bicyclists lack the protection of enclosed vehicles and are uniquely vulnerable to being seriously injured or killed in the event of a crash. According to the NHTSA, “In 2023 there were 1,166 pedalcyclist fatalities, accounting for 2.9 percent of all traffic fatalities. In 2023 there was a 4-percent increase in pedalcyclists killed (1,166) from the 1,117 pedalcyclists killed in 2022.” It is important that evidence is properly preserved after any truck accident.

  • Surveillance: Any surveillance footage that may have captured the crash should be sought.
  • Photos: Lots of photos of the accident site should be taken. These can be critical in helping to determine what happened.
  • Site History: Any records of previous accidents at the crash site should be collected and reviewed.
  • Medical Records: All of the medical records related to a person’s injuries should be preserved. The nature of a person’s injuries can help reveal how an accident took place.

As cities across Illinois have contributed to grow, safety features for cyclists have not kept pace. Bicyclists are asked to share the road with more and more vehicles along ever more precarious bike paths. Victims of bicycle accidents are protected by a number of laws. This includes the family of any person killed in a bicycle accident. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a wrongful death claim.
