Ronald Rockhold, 59, Injured in Tractor-Trailer Truck Accident on Route 48 near Clarksdale in Christian County

CLARKSDALE, ILLINOIS (January 13, 2025) – A semi-truck driver identified as Ronald Rockhold was injured in a Christian County truck accident on Route 48.
Christian County officials are saying that the accident took place at 8:54 AM on January 9. Two semi-tractor trailers carrying soybeans were involved in a major collision on the freeway.
Taylorville Fire Department responded to the scene of the crash to help all of the victims. Ronald Rockhold was transported to a local area hospital with injuries.
Police cited the 30-year-old driver of the other semi-truck with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. A full investigation into the Christian County semi-truck accident that injured Ronald Rockhold remains ongoing.
Liability for Christian County Semi-Truck Accidents
Truck drivers are required to obtain a commercial license and are expected to operate with a great deal of caution to avoid collisions. Many truck accidents involve drivers that are traveling at an unsafe speed. Pursuant to Illinois Vehicle Code 625 ILCS 5/11-601, “No vehicle may be driven upon any highway of this State at a speed which is greater than is reasonable and proper with regard to traffic conditions and the use of the highway, or endangers the safety of any person or property.” Several factors could contribute to a truck accident.
- Experience: Operating a commercial truck is substantially more difficult than driving a passenger vehicle. Serious injury truck accidents are far more likely to involve younger and less experienced drivers.
- Maintenance: Trucks have a high utilization rate and must be routinely inspected and well maintained to operate safely. Special attention should be given to the tires and brakes of the truck.
- Weather: Driving the speed limit could be dangerous given the prevailing weather and traffic conditions. Inclement weather remains a leading cause of preventable car accidents.
When a truck driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with another vehicle, this could be construed as negligence. Depending on the facts of any case, liability for a truck accident could extend beyond any driver deemed to be at fault. For example, if an at-fault truck driver was working at the time of a collision, their employer could potentially be liable. However, truck companies routinely hire their drivers as “independent contractors” to avoid direct liability for collisions.
Steps to Take After Illinois Semi-Truck Accidents
Driving a commercial truck can be particularly dangerous. Many workers are killed or seriously injured each year. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Workers in transportation and material moving occupations represented the occupational group with the most fatalities (1,495) in 2023. However, fatalities for this group declined 7.7 percent from 2022, driven by an 11.9-percent decrease in fatal injuries to heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers.” Certain actions should be taken after any truck accident.
- Medical Evaluation: It is vital that victims seek a thorough medical evaluation after any truck accident. Many of the injuries associated with a collision will not be obvious. Follow-up care is also very important. Insurance providers will try to argue that you were never seriously injured if there are major gaps in treatment.
- Evidence Preservation: All of the evidence associated with the collision should be collected and preserved. This will include photos of the accident site and any surveillance footage that may have captured what happened. Even pieces of debris from impacted vehicles can play an important role in establishing fault.
- Workers’ Compensation: If the victim of a truck accident was an employee and working at the time that they were injured, they may be entitled to benefits through the workers’ compensation system. This is a no-fault insurance scheme designed to help injured workers. Victims should let their employers know about the accident as soon as possible.
- Legal Counsel: Any person injured in a truck accident should seek the guidance of an experienced truck accident attorney. An attorney can review the unique facts of your case and let you know how much compensation you may be entitled to.
It can be hard to know what to do after being injured in a semi-truck accident. Victims of these collisions routinely sustain major injuries that impair their ability to work. They may also be left with extensive medical bills. Unfortunately, truck companies and their insurance providers will virtually never accept responsibility if one of their drivers causes an accident. This is one of the reasons it is so important for victims to seek legal guidance. Victims of truck accidents are able to recover damages for lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering through a personal injury claim.
