RYOBI 40V 24-Inch Cordless Hedge Trimmers Recalled Over Injury Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (June 26, 2025) – TTI Outdoor Power Equipment has issued a recall for their RYOBI 40V 24-Inch Cordless Hedge Trimmers because they can pose an injury hazard.

The recall was issued on June 12, 2025. Roughly 113,000 units were sold prior to the recall.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the RYOBI 40V 24-Inch Cordless Hedge Trimmers may unexpectedly activate after pressing the safety or trigger control individually.

This can pose a serious laceration hazard to users. The firm has received 27 reports of the blade on the trimmer unexpectedly activating.

This has led to 16 injuries that have ranged in severity from minor to serious. The RYOBI 40V 24-Inch Cordless Hedge Trimmers were manufactured in Vietnam.

Liability for Injuries Involving Consumer Products

Trimming trees can be unexpectedly quite dangerous. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “For the 10-year period, 9% (6,105) of the total fatalities were due to falls, and 7% (4,491) resulted from electrocutions. For the same period, the NTOF data also show that at least 207 workers involved in tree trimming and cutting (about 21 each year) died from injuries sustained at work.” The devices can also be dangerous for several reasons.

  • Tree trimmers can be incredibly sharp and cause serious lacerations if they come into contact with skin or clothing.
  • Tree trimmers can shift a person’s center of gravity and cause them to lose balance at heights.
  • Tree trimmers may unexpectedly activate when they are not supposed to.

Companies that design gardening equipment have a legal obligation to ensure that it is reasonably safe. It must comply with all safety standards. These devices are typically required to have a number of safety features, including chain brakes, hand guards, and chain catchers. If a tree trimmer has designed defects likely to contribute to injuries, this could form the basis of a strict product liability claim. There are several elements that must be demonstrated in any prima facie case of product liability.

  • The defendant sold the product that the plaintiff used.
  • The defendant was the commercial seller of the product.
  • The plaintiff suffered an injury as a result of using the product.
  • The product was defective at the time it was sold to the plaintiff.
  • The defect was the actual approximate cause of the plaintiff’s injury.

It can be hard to know what to do after being injured by a consumer product. Many of the people injured by tree trimmers have lost fingers or even functional use of one arm. Other victims have been electrocuted after their tools came into contact with power lines. Any person that is injured by a defective tree trimmer may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim.
