LANSING, ILLINOIS (July 7, 2026) – A 23-year-old man identified as Sebastian Stone has tragically died in a hit-and-run accident involving a semi-truck along Interstate 80 by Torrence Avenue.

County officials are saying that the accident occurred a little before 5:30 AM on June 24. A semi-truck driver was traveling down Interstate 80 when he collided with Sebastian Stone, who was changing a tire on his black Honda by the shoulder of the highway.

The truck driver involved reportedly left the scene. Illinois State Police and paramedics were called to the scene to help the injured victim.

Sadly, Sebastian Stone was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Authorities were able to locate the truck driver suspected of causing the accident after he fled the scene.

State troopers were able to determine that the truck driver involved was using his phone at the time of the deadly crash. That person has since been charged with a felony.

Liability for Illinois Semi-Truck Accidents

Truck drivers are required to obtain a commercial license and are expected to operate their vehicles with an abundance of caution. According to Illinois Vehicle Code 625 ILCS 5/11-709, “A vehicle shall be driven as nearly as practicable entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from such lane until the driver has first ascertained that such movement can be made with safety.” Operating a commercial truck is a great responsibility that requires the driver’s full attention at all times. What follows are a few ways a truck driver may have acted negligently prior to a crash.

  • Distraction: A truck driver may have been distracted by looking at their cellphone or other object.
  • Speed: A truck driver may have been traveling at a speed greater than would be safe given the prevailing road conditions.
  • Blind Spots: A truck driver may have failed to check their blind spots before changing lanes on an interstate.
  • Fatigue: A truck driver may have violated hours-of-service regulations, which causes them to become drowsy or fatigued behind the wheel.

If a truck driver allows their vehicle to drift onto the shoulder and strike a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. These types of collisions are nearly always preventable and tend to involve drivers that were not properly scanning the road ahead of them. When a truck driver does not stop after an injury collision, they could face criminal sanctions in addition to civil liability. It is a crime to leave the scene of any collision that causes injury to a third-party.

Third-Party Liability for Cook County Truck Accidents

Commercial trucks can weigh 80,000 lbs and can be extremely dangerous for pedestrians. According to the NHTSA, “ From 2016 to 2018 about 6.6% of all pedestrian fatalities involved a large truck (defined in FARS as a truck with a gross vehicle weight rating greater than 10,000 pounds) (FMCSA, 2020).” There could be several sources of liability for any collision with a semi-truck.

  • Business: The company that owned or operated a business that made use of a truck could be liable for any accident involving that truck.
  • Freight Company: A freight company that hired a truck company could be liable if the truck company had a poor safety record that they ignored.
  • Truck Manufacturer: The company that manufactured a truck’s component parts could potentially be responsible for a collision if there was some type of malfunction that caused the driver to lose control.

Truck accidents tend to be highly complex. In many cases, the factors that could contribute to any collision may take place long before the actual crash itself. It is important that evidence is preserved after any collision. Evidence can ultimately help determine how the crash took place and who could be responsible. The family of any person who died due to the negligent actions of a truck driver may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
