Inclement weather is one of the leading causes of car accidents in the United States. According to the Department of Transportation, “Each year, 24 percent of weather-related vehicle crashes occur on snowy, slushy or icy pavement and 15 percent happen during snowfall or sleet. Over 1,300 people are killed and more than 116,800 people are injured in vehicle crashes on snowy, slushy or icy pavement annually.” Drivers should take a number of measures in order to avoid collisions during inclement weather.
- Unless travel is absolutely necessary, it is often best just to avoid the roadways when they are covered in snow or heavy rain.
- Drivers should slow down well below the posted speed limit. Roadways can be covered in ice that can be imperceptible to drivers.
- Drivers should continuously scan the road ahead of them for potential hazards.
Head-on collisions are among the most dangerous types of accidents that a person can be involved in. These collisions account for only 2% of all collisions but cause roughly 11% of all traffic fatalities. All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid collisions. There is a rebuttable presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that crosses into opposing lanes of traffic and hits another vehicle. It is important that certain steps are taken after any car accident.
- A police report of the event should be conducted.
- Any surveillance footage of the crash should be reviewed.
- Medical records related to the incident should be preserved.
- An experienced car accident attorney should be contacted.
Car accidents are often highly preventable. Part of the problem is that many drivers are not used to operating their vehicles in hazardous conditions. It is important that victims of car accidents understand that they do have legal options. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim. Damages in a personal injury claim can help cover medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
