Shadeks ShadesU Roller Window Shades Recalled Over Entanglement Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (February 22, 2025) – Shadeks ShadesU Roller Window Shades have been recalled because they can pose a serious strangulation and entanglement hazard for children.

The recall was issued on February 20, 2025. Around 15,500 units were sold prior to the recall.

According to the recall notice by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Shadeks ShadesU Roller Window Shades have long operating chords that can cause serious injury or death to children.

The window blinds also violate federal regulations for window shades. There have been no reports of injuries at this time.

The Shadeks ShadesU Roller Window Shades were originally manufactured in Turkey.

Liability for Injuries Caused by Window Shades

Accidents and injuries caused by window shades are unfortunately all too common. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “There were more than 200 incidents involving children up to 8 years old due to strangulation hazards from window covering cords during a 13-year period from January 2009 through December 2021. A child died in 48% of those incidents.” There are a number of regulations related to window coverings.

  • Window coverings must not have free-hanging operating chords.
  • Window coverings should not use continuous cord loop and bead chain designs.
  • Custom order window coverings that require cords must not have cords that are more than 40% of the heights of the actual blinds.

Companies that design window coverings and other consumer products have a legal obligation to ensure that they are reasonably safe. They must consider all of the ways that their product could be used and misused. It is well established that children often misuse these devices in ways that could pose a serious risk of injury for them. If a company fails to create a product that adheres to safety regulations, this could form the basis of a strict liability claim in the event of an injury. It is critical that certain steps are taken after any accident involving window shades.

  • Medical records related to the incident should be preserved.
  • It should be determined if the window shades were on any recall list.
  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • An experienced product liability attorney should be contacted.

Accidents involving window shades are almost always preventable. They tend to involve instances where manufacturers knowingly violate safety regulations. Another major problem is that these devices can be imported from territories that do not have as strict safety regulations as the United States. It is crucial that accident victims and their families understand that they do have legal rights. The parent of any child injured by a window covering may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
