Recall Issued for Small Fish Montessori Busy Board Toys Over Violations of Mandatory Safety Standards for Children’s Toys

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (July 4, 2026) – Small Fish Montessori Busy Board Toys have been recalled after it was discovered that they pose a major risk of injury or death to young children.

The recall was issued on June 25, 2026. Roughly 1,013 units were sold prior to the recall.

According to the recall notice from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Small Fish Montessori Busy Board Toys violate mandatory safety standards for toys. In particular, the boards have small detachable magnets.

These pose a major risk of injury or death to small children. In particular, if a child were to ingest the magnets, they could latch onto one another and become lodged in a child’s digestive system.

This could cause numerous adverse outcomes, including blood poisoning and death. No injuries have been reported at this time.

The toys were originally sold on Amazon and manufactured in China.

Liability for Injuries Caused by Defective Toys

Millions of children are harmed every year in accidents involving toys and other consumer products. According to the National Safety Council, “In 2024, 15.1 million people were treated in emergency departments for injuries resulting from consumer products. Most of the injuries involve everyday products often assumed to be safe. Many of these injuries occur to our most vulnerable populations, older adults and young children.” There are several potential defects with children’s toys that could cause them to become hazardous.

  • Toys may have small parts that cause them to become choking hazards.
  • Toys may have small magnets that could potentially become latched to one another if a child swallows them.
  • Toys may have sharp edges that pose a major laceration hazard.
  • Toys may contain asbestos or other hazardous chemicals.

Product manufacturers have a legal obligation to ensure that children’s toys are reasonably safe. At a bare minimum, toys should be compliant with all federal safety guidelines. This necessitates that the toys do not have small magnets. It has been well understood for a long time that small magnets pose a major injury risk to children. When a toy manufacturer fails to abide by mandatory safety regulations, this could form the basis of a product liability claim.

Preserving Evidence After Injuries Caused By Defective Toys

Toys with small magnets have been responsible for many serious injuries and deaths involving children. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, “More than half of children’s hospital patients who had ingested magnets needed to be admitted, and about 10% had potentially life-threatening injuries, according to a new study.” It is important that evidence is properly preserved after any injury involving a defective children’s toy.

  • The product involved in an injury should be stored in a secure location.
  • Any packaging that the toy may have come in should also be preserved.
  • Medical records related to the child’s treatment should be documented.
  • Parents should contact an experienced product liability attorney.

Many people are quick to blame parents when a child is injured through their use of a product. However, many of these accidents involve products that were unsafe. Under the law, manufacturers can be held responsible when they create a defective product that harms children. This is why it is so important that parents carefully consider their legal options. They are able to seek some measure of accountability and compensation through a personal injury claim.
