Stanley Black & Decker Recalls DeWALT Battery Walk-Behind Mowers Over Injury Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (August 26, 2024) – Stanley Black & Decker has issued a recall for its DeWALT Battery walk-behind mowers because they can seriously injure operators.

The recall date was listed as August 15, 2024. Around 46,200 units were sold, including 9,600 sold in Canada. The problem with the mowers is that water can get into the handle support while the battery is installed.

This can lead to the motor failing to shut off when the bail handle is released. Stanley Black & Decker has received 10 reports of mowers failing to shut off.

The mowers are black and yellow, with a model number of DCMWP234U2.

Liability For Lawn Mower Accidents

Thousands of people are injured in accidents involving law mowers every year. Children are particularly at risk. According to BioMed Central, “Annually, about 10,000 children are injured by lawn mowers with 5% resulting in amputations. Lawn mower-related incidents are the 3rd leading cause of pediatric amputations in the U.S.” Companies that manufacture lawn mowers should take a number of measures in order to prevent accidents.

  • Companies should ensure that their products are compliant with all safety guidelines set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
  • Companies should rigorously test their products in all the ways that they will likely be used and misused.
  • Companies should investigate all reports of accidents and malfunctions related to their products.

Companies that manufacture consumer goods have a legal obligation to ensure that those products are reasonably safe. When a company fails to create a safe product, this could form the basis of a product liability claim. There are a number of different ways that a product could be defective. For example, when a company fails to warn about the non-obvious dangers associated with their products, this could be construed as a marketing defect. Victims of lawn mower accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Lacerations
  • Amputations
  • Broken bones
  • Death

It can be hard to know where to begin after being injured by a lawn mower. Many victims will blame themselves. But the truth of the matter is that many lawn mowers have safety defects that make them unusually dangerous. Any person who is injured by a defective lawn mower may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim. A product liability attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
