Stateside Bead Supply Recalled High-Powered Magnetic Beads Over Safety Concerns

Bead Manufacturer Stateside Bead Supply Recalls Magnetic Beads HIGH POWER 5mm AAA Grade Over Ingestion Hazard
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (June 25, 2024) – Stateside Bead Supply has issued a recall for the Magnetic Beads HIGH POWER 5mm after it was determined they present an ingestion hazard.
The recall notice by the Consumer Product Safety Commission also says that the beads violate federal safety regulations for magnets. An estimated 450 units of the beads have been sold.
The issue with the magnets is that they are stronger than permitted and could cause serious injury or death if ingested. In particular, they can cause twisting and/or blockage of the intestines.
This can lead to infection, blood poisoning, and death. The CSPC has estimated that 2,400 people have been treated in hospital emergency departments for magnet ingestions.
There have also been seven deaths reported. The company that manufactured the magnets is Boss Magnet, based in Taiwan.
Liability For Magnet Ingestions
Choking is a major cause of childhood injury and death in the United States every year. Magnets can be particularly dangerous. Nature reports that “Multiple magnet ingestions led to significant morbidity including hospitalizations, perforations (44.3%), severe intestinal necrosis (19.3%), peritonitis (13.6%), severe abdominal infection (10.2%), and septic shock (4.5%).” Companies that manufacture magnets should take a number of measures in order to prevent accidents.
- Companies should provide clear warning signs about the hazards associated with using their magnets.
- Companies should comply with all regulatory bodies, including the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
- Companies may need to place their products in child-resistant packaging.
- Companies should issue recalls when they discover safety issues with their products.
Companies that manufacture magnets or items with small parts must keep in mind the possibility that they can become choking hazards. According to the MINN Post, “In the United States, an average of 140 children choke to death each year, and thousands of others end up requiring emergency care after a choking episode.” When a company fails to follow safety guidelines and thus creates a potentially dangerous product, they could be held at fault through a product liability claim. It is important that certain steps be taken after any injury involving magnets.
- Medical records related to the incident should be preserved.
- It should be determined if the magnets involved were part of a recall.
- An experienced product liability attorney should be contacted.
There are a number of advantages that come with hiring an attorney. For starters, they can investigate all of the unique facts of your case and let you know if you have a claim that can be pursued. It also does not cost anything up front to hire an attorney. Instead, they work entirely on a contingency fee basis and only get paid by the opposing party if they are able to resolve your claim.
