SHEIN Distribution Corporation Issues Recall for Teckwe Hair Dryer Brushes Due to Possible Shock Hazard

Teckwe Hair Dryer Brushes Recalled Over Electrocution Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (February 4, 2025) – The SHEIN Distribution Corporation has issued a recall for its Teckwe Hair Dryer Brushes because they can pose an electrocution hazard.

The recall was issued on January 23, 2025. Around 310 units were sold prior to the recall.

According to the recall notice by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the handheld dryers lack a crucial immersion protection device. This device is designed to protect users from electrocution if they fall into water.

Accordingly, any person that falls into water with this device runs the risk of being seriously injured or killed in an electrocution. No injuries have been reported at this time.

Liability for Electrocutions Involving Consumer Products

Electrocutions involving consumer products are actually somewhat common. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “There was an estimated average of 100 electrocution fatalities associated with consumer products per year over the 3-year period from 2018 through 2020, with an estimated 110 consumer product-related electrocutions in 2018, 100 in 2019, and 90 in 2020.” There are a number of steps that companies should take to prevent their products from inadvertently electrocuting consumers.

  • Companies should comply with all government electrical safety regulations.
  • Companies should ensure that their devices are protected by high-quality insulation materials.
  • Companies should thoroughly test their products in all the ways that they are likely to be used and misused.
  • Companies may need to integrate circuit protection features in their products.
  • Companies should insert immersion protection devices if there is a risk that a device may become submerged.

Electrocution involving hair dryers and bathtubs may seem like a freak occurrence, but a number of people have died in this manner. According to one article in JAMA Network, “From 1979 to 1982, in the United States, at least 95 persons were electrocuted in bathtubs; 66% of the deaths occurred during the winter and spring.” Companies that make hair dryers have a legal obligation to equip them with immersion devices that prevent electrocution. If a person is electrocuted by a device that lacked this safety feature, this could form the basis of a product liability claim. Victims of electrocutions tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Amputations
  • Organ damage
  • Neurological damage
  • Stroke
  • Death

The vast majority of electrocutions with consumer products are entirely preventable. They tend to be the results of companies that failed to adhere to safety standards. Part of the problem is that many devices that lack required safety features are manufactured or developed overseas in countries with different safety standards. It is important for victims of these accidents to understand that they do have legal options. They may be able to seek compensation through a product liability claim. A product liability attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
