Tesla Recalls Powerwall 2 AC Battery Power Systems Recalled Over Fire Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (November 25, 2025) – Tesla Powerwall 2 AC Battery Power Systems have been recalled because they pose a serious risk of injury or death from fire.

The recall was issued on November 13, 2025. Roughly 10,500 units were sold prior to the recall.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the lithium-ion battery cells inside of the Tesla Powerwall 2 AC Battery Power Systems could cause the unit to stop functioning during its normal operating hours.

This may potentially lead to a dangerous situation where the unit overheats and potentially catches fire. This creates a serious fire and burn hazard.

Tesla has received a total of 22 reports of overheating. This includes six reports where the units were smoking or catching fire. There have been no injuries reported at this time.

Liability for Injuries Involving Tesla Powerwalls

Companies that create products with lithium-ion batteries have a legal obligation to ensure that these units are reasonably safe. It is well known that lithium-ion batteries may overheat and potentially spark fires in certain situations. According to the National Fire Protection Association, “Since 2022, New York City has experienced more than 800 fires sparked by lithium-ion batteries, leading to 30 deaths and more than 400 injuries. Lithium-ion batteries have been the third-leading cause of accidental fires across New York City in each of the past two years, trailing only electrical wiring and smoking.” Companies should take several measures to prevent their products with lithium-ion batteries from becoming dangerous.

  • Safe Battery Design: Companies should ensure that all of their batteries have baseline safety features that meet or exceed industry standards.
  • High-Quality Materials: companies should source their materials from reputable suppliers. Cheap or counterfeit materials could potentially cause a battery contamination that may contribute to a fire.
  • Product Testing: Companies should test their products in all of the real-world conditions that they will likely encounter.

Companies have a legal obligation to ensure that their products are reasonably safe. A company like Tesla could be liable for any injury or fire that was a result of designed defects with their products. There are many ways that a device with lithium-ion batteries could be dangerous. It may lack adequate heat dispersal features or an automatic shut-off feature. A product may also lack adequate warning features or instructions to let consumers know about certain dangers. It is important that certain steps are taken after any accident with a consumer product.

  • Victims should seek medical treatment as soon as possible.
  • Victims should preserve as much evidence as possible.
  • Victims should preserve all contract agreements with a service installer.
  • Victims should seek the guidance of an experienced product liability attorney.

Residential fires can be absolutely devastating for all involved. Victims tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries. They may also need to contend with the total loss of all of their earthly possessions. It is important for accident victims to understand that they do have legal rights. They are able to seek some measure of justice and accountability through a product liability claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering. There are also no up-front fees associated with hiring an attorney. They get paid entirely from the opposing party if they are able to resolve your case.
