The Pearl of Elk Grove Nursing Home Cited for Abuse by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services
ELK GROVE VILLAGE, ILLINOIS (April 29, 2025) – The Pearl of Elk Grove nursing home in Elk Grove Village, Illinois has been cited for abuse, according to a report by Medicare.
The nursing home has an overall rating of one out of five stars on its Medicare profile page. According to that page, “Abuse is defined as the willful infliction of injury, unreasonable confinement, intimidation, or punishment with resulting physical harm, pain or mental anguish. It includes verbal abuse, sexual abuse, physical abuse, and mental abuse.”
A recent health inspection listed numerous issues affecting residents. Some were more minor, while others were more serious.
In one instance, the facility failed to implement adequate fluid restriction for a resident suffering from congestive heart failure. In another health inspection in January 2025, the facility allegedly failed to properly monitor the behavior and side effects of a resident on antipsychotic medication.
According to that report, “This failure resulted in R4 continuing to receive Seroquel and experiencing a hospitalization , increased falls, and inability to participate in his rehab care.”
Liability for Elk Grove Village Nursing Home Abuse
Abuse and neglect in a nursing home setting remain remarkably common. According to the World Health Organization, “Around 1 in 6 people 60 years and older experienced some form of abuse in community settings during the past year. Rates of abuse of older people are high in institutions such as nursing homes and long-term care facilities, with 2 in 3 staff reporting that they have committed abuse in the past year.” Mistreatment in a nursing home setting can take many different forms.
- Psychological abuse
- Physical abuse
- Financial abuse
- Neglect
- Sexual abuse
Nursing homes have a legal obligation to protect the residents from abuse and mistreatment. This is established under both federal and state law. According to the Illinois Nursing Home Care Act (210 ILCS 45/2-107), an owner, licensee, or agent of a nursing facility must not abuse or mistreat a resident. It is the duty of the facility, employees, or agents to become aware of any such abuse and to report it accordingly. When a nursing home allows a resident to be abused and neglected, this could form the basis of a negligence claim.
Many lawsuits have been filed after nursing home patients have been harmed by bedsores. Consider, for example, Bell v. Alden Wentworth Rehabilitation and Health Care Inc. A patient sued his former nursing home for allegedly causing him to suffer a broken knee and bedsores. The facility allegedly knew that the patient was at a high risk of developing pressure sores but failed to take reasonable measures to prevent them. It is important that certain steps are taken after any instance of abuse in a nursing home setting.
- Medical Records: All medical records related to injuries should be collected.
- Reporting: The abuse should be properly reported to a public health agency.
- Legal Counsel: Victims of abuse should seek the legal guidance of an experienced nursing home abuse attorney.
Much of the abuse that takes place in nursing homes is preventable. It tends to be the result of facilities that are not adequately staffed. It may also include situations where existing staff members are not particularly well trained. Every resident at a nursing facility has different medical needs. Some residents may be at a greater risk of being injured in a fall. Other residents may be at risk of developing pressure ulcers. A person that is injured in a nursing home setting may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
