Liability For Cook County Semi-Truck Accidents

Semi-trucks make up a relatively small number of the vehicles on the roadway. But they are involved in a disproportionate number of serious injury collisions. According to the IIHS, “The number of people who died in large truck crashes was 51% higher in 2022 than in 2009, when it was the lowest it has been since the collection of fatal crash data began in 1975. The number of truck occupants who died was 83% higher than in 2009.” There are a number of reasons that semi-trucks can be particularly dangerous.

  • Semi-trucks have large blind spots that can obscure the presence of other vehicles.
  • Semi-trucks can weigh as much as 80,000 lbs and can be dangerous even at lower speeds.
  • Semi-trucks have a high ground clearance, which can lead to vehicles and pedestrians being pulled underneath.

Truck drivers must exercise a great deal of care in order to avoid collisions. Pursuant to Illinois Vehicle Code (625 ILCS 5/11-601), drivers shall not operate their vehicles at a speed greater than what would be safe given the prevailing conditions of the road. If a truck driver failed to slow down in order to avoid a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any semi-truck accident.

  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • Medical records related to the crash should be collected.
  • An experienced personal injury attorney should be contacted.

It can be hard to know where to begin after any semi-truck accident. Accident victims may not realize the full extent of their injuries for several days or even years. To make matters worse, truck drivers will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility if they cause an accident that injures someone. Any person injured in a truck accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
