Liability for Chicago Car Accidents
Speeding remains one of the most common causes of car accidents. According to the NHTSA, “For more than two decades, speeding has been involved in approximately one-third of all motor vehicle fatalities. In 2022, speeding was a contributing factor in 29% of all traffic fatalities.” There are a number of potential consequences to speeding.
- Drivers are much more likely to lose control at higher speeds.
- Drivers have a much greater stopping distance in the event of an emergency.
- Increased speeds can dramatically increase the severity of a collision.
Drivers have a legal obligation to take reasonable measures in order to avoid collisions. They must operate with a great deal of care in order to avoid causing accidents. Drivers must be particularly cautious during heavy traffic and periods of adverse weather. If a driver fails to slow down in order to avoid hitting another vehicle, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any car accident.
- Accident victims should seek a medical evaluation as early as possible.
- Surveillance footage of the collision should be sought.
- A police report of the incident should be conducted.
- An experienced car accident attorney should be contacted.
The effects of a car accident are not always immediately obvious. In many cases, people may not realize the full extent of their injuries for several days or weeks. Insurance companies may try to get accident victims to accept quick settlement offers. But this is virtually never a good idea without first speaking with an attorney. An attorney can examine the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
