Liability for East Garfield Park Apartment Fires
Property owners in Illinois have a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition. This is particularly important for apartments and other residential structures where people live. When a property owner has actual or constructive notice of a dangerous condition with their premises, they must take action. There are many ways that an apartment may be in a dangerous condition.
- An apartment may have blocked exits that make it difficult for people to escape in the event of a fire.
- An apartment may not have functional smoke detectors.
- The electrical system and apartment may be outdated or lack needed repairs.
There could be several sources of liability for any apartment fire. These sources could extend beyond the company that owned the property. For example, the company that manufactured a consumer product could also be liable for a fire. A number of fires are caused by malfunctioning devices that contained lithium-ion batteries.
Steps to Take After East Garfield Park Apartment Fires
