Two Injured in Explosion at Coogee Chemical Facility in Ottawa

OSHA Investigating Magnesium Fire Accident That Left Two People Injured at Coogee Chemical Facility in Ottawa

OTTAWA, ILLINOIS (April 23, 2026) – Two people were injured in an explosion and magnesium fire at the Coogee Chemical facility in Ottawa.

LaSalle County officials are saying that the incident took place around 8:00 AM on Tuesday morning. Two employees were injured following a magnesium fire that resulted in an explosion.

According to local reports, a magnesium fire is highly dangerous and cannot be extinguished with fire or water. The fire apparently started due to some type of malfunction with oxygen sensor equipment.

The malfunction caused oxygen levels at the site to increase. This caused a major chemical reaction with the magnesium, thereby resulting in the explosion.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the victims. Two employees at the Coogee Chemical facility were transported to a local area hospital to receive treatment.

A full investigation into the accident remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Ottawa Workplace Explosion Accidents

Employers must provide workplaces that are free from obvious hazards and reasonably safe. According to 29 U.S.C. § 654(a)(1), “each employer shall furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which are free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to his employees.” Employers should take several steps to prevent magnesium fires.

  • Ignition Sources: Employers should do their best to control potential ignition sources. When feasible, employees should work with spark-resistant tools.
  • Magnesium Dust: Employers should do their best to frequently clean magnesium dust and shavings. Even small amounts of magnesium can act as a fuel source for a fire.
  • Storage: Magnesium should be stored in a dry and cool environment and kept away from water and other oxidizers.

When an employee is injured in Illinois, they will typically have recourse through the workers’ compensation system. This is a no-fault insurance scheme designed to help injured workers. An injured worker may also be able to pursue damages through a third-party liability claim. A third-party liability claim may be possible if an entity separate from a worker’s employer contributed to an accident. This could include the company that created oxygen sensor equipment or some other product.

Magnesium fires can be extremely dangerous and routinely leave victims with major injuries. According to one study in ResearchGate, “Magnesium fires produce extremely high temperatures, often exceeding 2000°C and reaching up to 3000°C during ignition, far above typical hydrocarbon fire levels. However, their highly reactive and unpredictable combustion makes it difficult to maintain consistent fire intensity and a stable heat release rate.” Several steps should be taken after any magnesium fire.

  • All of the medical records related to the victim’s injuries should be collected.
  • The OSHA report created after the accident should be sought.
  • Any person who may have seen what happened should be interviewed as early as possible.
  • Victims of workplace accidents should seek the guidance of an experienced personal injury attorney.

It can be difficult to know what to do after being injured in any workplace accident. Many victims will need to take extensive periods of time away from their jobs if they are involved in any type of explosion. They could also be left with high medical bills. It is important that workers understand that they do have legal rights. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim. An attorney can examine the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
