Two Injured In Springfield Bus Accident on Interstate 55

SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS (August 30, 2025) – At least two people were injured in a Springfield bus accident on Interstate 55 northbound not far from milepost 95.

Sangamon County officials are saying that the collision took place around 4:03 PM on Friday. A Mineral Area College transport bus collided with the passenger vehicle before hitting a guard rail on the left shoulder.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help all of the victims. Two people were transported to the hospital with injuries.

The circumstances leading up to the crash remain unknown. However, a photo of the Springfield bus accident shows the passenger vehicle with what appears to be damage in the back.

This indicates that it may have been rear-ended by the bus. A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Sangamon County Bus Accidents

Buses are considered common carriers, and their drivers must operate with an abundance of caution as set forth in the Common Carrier Liability Act (740 ILCS 25/). Bus drivers must exercise the utmost care in order to avoid collisions. If a bus driver fails to slow down in order to avoid a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Several factors could contribute to a bus accident.

  • Speeding: Bus drivers must always maintain their vehicle at a safe speed for the prevailing road conditions.
  • Distractions: Bus drivers must continuously scan the road ahead of them for hazards.
  • Fatigue: Bus drivers should be well rested before the start of their shift.

There is simply no reason for a bus to ever rear-end a vehicle in front of them. Pursuant to 625 ILCS 5/11-710, “The driver of a motor vehicle shall not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of such vehicles and the traffic upon and the condition of the highway.” When a bus driver fails to exercise due care to avoid a collision, their employer could be held vicariously liable for the accident.

Steps to Take After a Sangamon County Bus Accident

Many people are seriously injured each year in bus accidents. According to The Journalist’s Resource, “on average, about 63,000 buses [of all kinds] are involved in an accident each year; about 14,000 result in an injured person, and 325 result in a fatal injury.” It is important that certain steps be taken after any bus accident.

  • Police Report: The police should be called to the scene so they can begin an immediate investigation. Police reports contain an officer’s best attempt to piece together what happened and who may be liable.
  • Medical Evaluation: Victims should seek a thorough medical evaluation. Many of the injuries associated with a bus accident will not be immediately obvious.
  • Legal Support: Any person injured in a Sangamon County bus accident should seek the support of a skilled bus accident attorney. An attorney can help victims receive compensation for their medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requires buses that can transport 16 or more passengers to have at least $5 million in liability coverage. This can be used to support people injured in collisions with these vehicles. Unfortunately, bus companies and insurance providers will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility when one of their drivers is involved in a crash. This is why it is so important that victims seek legal guidance.
