Sangamon County officials are saying that the incident took place around 12:35 p.m. on Tuesday. An explosion rocked the home and left it engulfed in flames.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victims. A 64-year-old man and a 71-year-old man were both taken to a local hospital with injuries.
Authorities believe that natural gas likely caused the explosion.
Liability For Springfield Gas Explosions
Gas explosions are unfortunately all too common and lead to many serious injuries and deaths. According to WBTV, “since 2010 there have been more than 2,700 gas leak incidents across the country that were considered significant, and that 362 of those incidents resulted in explosions. Additionally, those incidents have injured nearly 700 people and killed more than 140.” There are a number of factors that could contribute to a natural gas explosion.
- Improper Installation: When appliances are improperly installed, this could lead to leaks. This could include instances when connections are improperly fitted or when the wrong materials are used.
- Corrosion: Over time, the pipes that transfer natural gas can corrode. This may eventually lead to a leak and subsequent explosion.
- Poor Ventilation: Inadequate ventilation in certain areas can cause natural gas to build up, thereby increasing the odds of an explosion.
Companies that distribute natural gas could face liability in the event of a natural gas explosion. These companies have a legal obligation to maintain their gas lines in a reasonably safe condition. When these companies have actual or constructive notice that there are safety concerns with their gas lines, they must take action. Gas companies should take several steps in order to avoid gas explosions.
- Gas companies should conduct inspections on all of their lines.
- Gas companies should maintain their lines.
- Gas companies should use technology to determine when and where leaks occur.
- Gas companies should implement anti-corrosive measures.
Gas explosions can be incredibly harmful to victims in many different ways. In many cases, houses can be completely destroyed by a gas explosion. Victims are often left with high medical bills. Those injuries may prevent them from working for extended periods of time. Any person injured in a natural gas explosion may have legal recourse through a civil claim. A personal injury attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
