CHICAGO, CALIFORNIA (March 9, 2023) – Two pedestrians were seriously injured in a Ukrainian Village car accident, according to Chicago police officials.
Cook County authorities are saying that the collision took place around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. A 46-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman were crossing the street by West Chicago Avenue and North Damen Avenue.
A sedan failed to stop at a red light before hitting the victims. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the Ukrainian Village in order to help both of the victims.
They were taken to Stroger Hospital with serious injuries. A full investigation into the Ukrainian Village pedestrian accident remains ongoing at this time.
Liability For Chicago Pedestrian Accidents
Thousands of pedestrians are killed or seriously injured in car accidents every year. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, “3,434 pedestrians were killed on U.S. roadways in the first half of 2022, based on preliminary data reported by State Highway Safety Offices. A second report analyzing state-reported data for all of 2022 found that roadways continue to be incredibly deadly for pedestrians.” Drivers should take a number of measures in order to avoid hitting pedestrians.
- Drivers should slow down at intersections.
- Drivers should abstain from alcohol and other intoxicating substances.
- Drivers should check their blind spots before making turns on the roadway.
All drivers have a legal obligation to use caution in order to avoid hitting pedestrians. Pursuant to Illinois Vehicle Code 625 ILCS 5/11-1003.1, every driver must exercise due care to avoid colliding with any pedestrian. They must also use their horns when necessary and exercise the proper precautions to avoid colliding with any child or obviously confused person. Victims of pedestrian accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries, including:
- Broken bones
- Head injuries
- Lacerations
- Spinal cord injuries
- Organ damage
A large number of pedestrian accidents are preventable and involve some amount of driver negligence. This is particularly the case when drivers are making turns on the roadway. Sadly, though, drivers will often do everything in their power to deny liability for any collision. This is why it is so important that every accident be evaluated by a competent third party.
