Liability for Attacks in Ubers

Many people are injured in Uber rides every year. Many of these incidents involve sexual assaults. According to CNN, “In its latest report, Uber said it received 3,824 reports of the five most severe categories of sexual assault, which range from “non-consensual kissing of a non-sexual body part” to “non-consensual sexual penetration,” or rape.”  People have reported many other types of incidents.

  • Drivers have reported being attacked by passengers.
  • Passengers have reported being attacked by drivers.
  • People have been shot by other drivers while in an Uber.
  • Uber drivers have forced passengers out of their vehicles on dangerous roads.

Depending on the facts of any case, Uber could be liable for any instance where a person is shot in the course of their ride. Consider, for example, one lawsuit filed against Uber for a deadly shooting in Kalamazoo, Michigan. An Uber driver allegedly picked up a convicted killer just hours before he would go on a shooting rampage all over the city. It is important that certain steps are taken after being injured in a shooting.

  • Medical records related to the incident should be collected.
  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • It should be determined if the assailant underwent a background check if they were an Uber driver.

It can be difficult to know where to begin after being attacked in an Uber. Victims often suffer serious injuries that may require them to take long periods of time away from work. Even after the physical injuries from an assault have healed, victims are often left with long-term psychological injuries. Any person injured in an Uber may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
