VIVI e-bike Model Number C26 Recalled Over Fire Hazard

VIVI E-bike Model Number C26 With Lithium-Ion Batteries Recalled Due to Fire and Burn Hazard

VIVI e-bike Model Number C26 Recalled Over Fire Hazard

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (August 3, 2025) – VIVI e-bikes with lithium-ion batteries have been recalled because they can pose a serious fire and burn hazard to consumers.

The recall was issued on July 17, 2025. Roughly 24,000 units were sold prior to the recall.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the batteries in the VIVI e-bike model number C26 may overheat, thereby creating a fire and burn hazard.

VIVI has received 14 reports where the batteries overheated. These incidents led to three separate fires.

The VIVI e-bikes were initially manufactured in China.

Liability for Accidents Involving E-Bikes

Bicycles and scooters with lithium-ion batteries have been involved in a number of fires over the years. According to the New York Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, “Over the past few years, NYC has experienced an alarming rise in the number of lithium-ion battery fires involving powered mobility devices, including e-bikes. In 2019, there were 30 e-bike fires in the City. In 2020, that number jumped to 44 fires, yielding 23 injures. In 2021, the number of fires soared to 104, causing 79 injuries and four deaths.” There are numerous defects with lithium-ion batteries that could lead to fires.

  • Internal Short Circuits: Fires could be caused by metal particles that get in the way between anodes and cathodes. This could lead to internal short circuits.
  • Improper Sealing: If battery cells are improperly sealed, this could allow moisture and oxygen to enter and cause thermal runway.
  • Inadequate Thermal Management: Batteries should be designed in a way that they are able to dissipate excess heat. But many batteries have insufficient thermal management systems that allow heat to become trapped and build up overtime.

Companies that create e-bikes and other devices with lithium-ion batteries have a legal obligation to ensure that they are reasonably safe. They must take into consideration all of the ways that their device could potentially be used and even misused. Lithium-ion battery fires are a known hazard. Companies must take this into consideration and put in proper safety mechanisms to reduce the odds of a battery fire. When a company creates a product with design, manufacturing, or marketing defects, this could form the basis for a strict product liability claim. It is important that certain actions are taken after any accident involving a defective e-bike.

  • Evidence: All evidence related to the incident should be preserved. This includes any fire or police report that may have been created.
  • Affected Product: The product involved in the incident should be stored in a secure location where it is not likely to cause further harm. It should also be determined if it was on any recall lists.
  • Medical Records: All medical records related to injuries should be collected and stored.
  • Legal Counsel: Accident victims should seek the guidance of an experienced Chicago product liability attorney.

An attorney can investigate all the unique facts of any accident and determine if there are any liable parties. In many cases, companies know that their products have designed shortcomings. But they would rather not take any action so that they are able to save money. To make matters worse, they will proceed to deny responsibility if their product injures someone. Any person injured by a dangerous product may be able to see some measure of accountability through a bodily injury claim.
