Woman Killed In Minooka Semi-Truck Accident On Interstate 80

MINOOKA, ILLINOIS (April 29, 2023) – A woman from Florida has tragically died in a Minooka semi-truck accident along Interstate 80 by Wabena Avenue.

Will County officials are saying that the incident took place around 7:30 a.m. on Saturday. A semi-truck was heading down the road on Interstate 80.

The semi-truck left the roadway and hit a guardrail before going through a ditch and into an embankment. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victim.

A passenger in the semi-truck was taken to the St. Joseph Hospital where she was pronounced dead. A full investigation into the crash remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Minooka Semi-Truck Accidents

Semi-trucks account for a relatively small number of the vehicles on the roadway. But they are involved in a disproportionate number of traffic fatalities. According to the National Safety Council, “In 2021, 5,700 large trucks were involved in a fatal crash, an 18% increase from 2020 and a 49% increase in the last 10 years. The involvement rate per 100 million large-truck miles traveled is up 7% from 2020, and up 22% in the last 10 years.” There are a number of factors that could contribute to a truck accident:

  • Speeding
  • Distracted driving
  • Inclement weather
  • Poor road conditions
  • Vehicle system failures

All drivers must exercise due care in order to avoid collisions. Pursuant to Illinois Vehicle Code (625 ILCS 5/11-601), no person shall drive a motor vehicle at a speed greater than what would be reasonable or safe given the prevailing conditions of the roadway. If a driver failed to slow down in order to avoid a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. There are many steps that should be taken after any semi-truck accident.

  • Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • Maintenance records for any truck involved should be reviewed.
  • A thorough investigation should be conducted.

Depending on the facts of any case, the company that manufactured a semi-truck or its component parts could be liable for an accident. Companies have a legal responsibility to create vehicles that are reasonably safe. The family of any person that died in a semi-truck accident may have legal recourse through a civil claim. It is extremely important that all evidence is properly preserved after any collision.
