I Hurt My Back and Now They Let Me Go

Question:

I worked at my company for 13 years and fell and hurt my back had surgery and now am unable to preform my job tasks. I have permanent restrictions and they let me go today Aug. 27. I need to know what to do next and what my options are. I am at my wits end.

Answer:

If you hurt your back at work and had surgery, then you are entitled to Workers Compensation benefits. The fact that they cruelly terminated you doesn’t change that fact. In fact, you may be entitled to greater compensation in terms of a wage differential because of that fact.
Losing employment at a job can be devastating. But, like getting remarried, many people find good new jobs. There is hope. It’s hard to see now.
My advice: Apply for other work. Hire an excellent workers’ compensation or back injury lawyer in Chicago to prosecute your rights. Not getting an attorney is the worst thing you can do for yourself and for the future. You owe it to yourself to have an attorney. Make sure you search carefully and selectively. Don’t make a fast decision. Find someone dedicated to his profession and his clients, rather than one who is dedicated only to the money. Finally, check your local time limits for filing and make sure those aren’t violated. I urge you to find an attorney after a careful search within a couple weeks. We cannot assist because we practice only in Illinois. I wish you the best.
